By Jason Apuzzo. For you Libertas readers who are currently digging ABC’s V, I wanted to mention to you folks that something quite similar (at least in terms of being a futuristic invasion scenario) – namely, John Milius’ video game Homefront – is debuting March 18th and has a new trailer out which you can see above.
Homefront is set in 2027. The idea is that North Korea has by then become a mini-expansionist empire, invigorated by a young new leader, and that this empire grows to consume both South Korea and Japan. Meanwhile, the United States’ economic and military profiles continue to weaken.
It’s at this point that the North Koreans launch some kind of advanced electronic pulse weapon that cripples our defense systems – and subsequently invade the American homeland. A patriotic American ‘insurgency’ ensues.
The video below develops in great detail the thinking behind the game, and I recommend that you give it a look – even if you don’t like video games, or have no plans to buy this one – because it will encourage you to know that what a refuge the video game world has become for Cold Warriors.
Enjoy, and best wishes to John and the Homefront team. If Call of Duty‘s success is any indication, this game may become a major hit.

I am a 57 year old patriot and I play video games. I stopped drinking, and video games are are a heck of a lot cheaper and healthier than blurry weekends. I like good games–right now I’m playing “Fallout: New Vegas” and “Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.”
I. Will. Play. This. Game.
I hear you, brother.
Question: have you played Mass Effect 2? I’m looking for opinions on that.
“Mass Effect 2” is very good. In my opinion. it is better than the first “Mass Effect.” BioWare cleaned up the weapon and armor upgrades, so it is not as cofusing. And Tali’Zorah is back!
Thanks for the appraisal – I appreciate it!
I bought a PS3 as my Blu Ray player for this reason. I’m not the biggest gamer, but of course I played Black Ops, and Medal of Honor — and I will definitely be be buying Homefront.
What really fascinates me about the game is the small-town settings. When I was a local sports writer, I used to visit towns like the ones depicted in Homefront, and the weird part of me always thought that the sh#it would really have to hit the fan to make it to these areas of the country.
Luckily in those parts, the 2nd Amendment is the real Homeland Security, so I hope Milius gets into that, like he did in Red Dawn.
As for Mass Effect, I was so excited about the first one that I borrowed a friend’s 360 to play it, and it may be my favorite game of all time. Mass Effect 2 was recently announced for the PS3, so I’ll have to wait for that. The first one had one of the more patriotic, freedom-loving stories I’ve encountered in a video game.
I’m sure Mass Effect 2 is brilliant, because Bioware seems to really grasp video games as an interactive storytelling medium.
Cool, Vince, thanks for your comments and intel – especially about Mass Effect. I’ve been told to check that out, so I think I will …
