By Jason Apuzzo. Take a look at a new trailer above that aired during the NBA Finals for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and tell me if you’re not left with the impression that this film will feature the UN collaborating with an alien invasion of planet Earth. If that’s the case … thank you, Michael Bay! You get better with each film.
In other news, Relativity Media has apparently just picked up distribution rights to Act of Valor, described as a “very patriotic” action thriller about the Navy SEALs, starring a cast of unknowns … along with actual, active-duty SEALs. The film was written by 300 screenwriter Kurt Johnstad, and may also be getting an IMAX release. You can read more about the project here, and there are already some production photos available.
This is good news. I’m liking this new SEAL-movie trend because it indicates that Hollywood is finally becoming responsive to actual, present-day events. If only this had been the case ten years ago …

I’m liking the “SEAL-movie trend” as well, but I’m still a little wary. There’s still plenty of time between now and 2012 and if Obama loses the election, there is still time to kill these projects when the military are the bad guys again. Or to disavow it ever existed like Path to 9/11. LOL
That’s quite a piece of commentary to slip in, if, in fact, you’re correct. That’s the vibe I get too though. I wonder if it will be along the lines of Palpatine leading all the Senators into tyranny like in Episode 3 or if it will just be a “small players in the UN were corrupt, not the UN itself”-kind of theme. I guess both themes make similar points, but the latter is significantly weak-kneed compared to the other.
Re: the SEAL movie, that one is already and production and will definitely see the light of day. Relativity, the company picking it up, is a major player.
As for Transformers, we’ll have to wait and see. My sense is that Bay doesn’t do small-scale conspiracies, only big ones. 😉
This is very promising for Transformers — can’t wait for the film.
I hate to be contrary, or a stick in the mud, but I really don’t care about a Navy SEAL movie … unless it’s a serious examination of the Islamist threat.
I want to see more films like “Mao’s Last Dancer,” “The Lives of Others,” “Farewell,” or any film that shows the struggle of the individual — the regular person — against the state to protect his or her private property.
