LFM Review: Four Lions as Cinematic Tea Party

Chris Morris’ scintillating new film Four Lions is so wickedly funny, shatters so many taboos, and is so brazen in its satire of Islamic terrorism – and the vacuous, Western political correctness that supports it – that it’s a wonder Morris isn’t in a witness protection program right now. Not that he would need to be protected from jihadis, whom I imagine spend little time watching indie cinema – but from the Western cultural establishment, whose protective covering over the lunacy of Islamic radicalism Morris rips away with comic gusto and flair in this marvelous new film that opens in select theaters nationwide today.

Four Lions was a big hit at last year’s Sundance and this summer’s L.A. Film Festival, and has already done killer business at the indie box office in the UK (it opened the same weekend as Iron Man 2, yet had a better per-screen average), yet after a long and successful tour of the festival circuit the film only recently secured distribution here in the U.S. from first-time distributor Drafthouse films. Having seen Four Lions during its much-discussed festival run, it’s not hard to understand why. This uproariously funny and sophisticated film, that had the audience at the L.A. Film Festival in hysterics from the opening scene on (Four Lions was eventually voted Best Narrative Feature by audiences at the LAFF), is nonetheless so subversive in its vision of Islamic terrorism – so thoroughly and mercilessly dismissive of any justification for terrorism – that by the end of the film any lingering shred of sympathy that might exist toward the terrorists’ point of view has simply been pulverized. Imagine starting up a heavy-metal band fresh off watching Spinal Tap, or becoming a French police officer after watching Peter Sellars play Inspector Clouseau, and you can imagine the kind of effect Four Lions must have on young Brits thinking of starting up a terror cell.

Four Lions is about a bumbling UK terror cell living in Sheffield. The two key leaders of the cell are Omar (Riz Ahmed) – the only reasonably sane or professional one in the group, around whom most of the film revolves – and Azzam al-Britanni (or ‘Barry’ to his friends, played with Falstaffian flair by Nigel Lindsay), who’s actually just an abrasive, working class white-guy convert to Islam. Nigel Lindsay’s portrayal of Azzam al-Britanni almost steals the whole show; the combination of belligerence and stupidity he brings to the character is pitch-perfect. Other guys in the terror cell include the sweet but utterly moronic Waj (Kayvan Novak), and Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) – a mumbling doofus who for some reason is convinced he can train crows to be suicide bombers. A fifth member of the group, Hassan (Arsher Ali), is a pretentious wanna-be rapper (his music conducts a ‘jihad of the mind’) who is recruited while Omar and Waj are in Pakistan botching their terrorist training.

The film follows the different members of the group as they struggle to conceal their activities, aided only by blind luck – and a kind of inane cunning – with the film climaxing in the terror cell’s effort to bomb the London Marathon. That last sequence in particular is a tour-de-force of action, comic-timing, suspense … and ultimately, great emotional power. Without giving away the film’s ending, let’s say simply that Four Lions does not pull punches about the full tragedy and inhumanity of terrorism. Indeed, much to the contrary, by the end of Four Lions one has the sense that the film’s manic humor has only been a ruse – a clever set-up – for what is actually a devastating and deeply moral payoff at the end.

What struck me the most about Four Lions was the intelligence and sophistication Chris Morris and his actors brought to this material. The trailer for the film (see above) captures the opera buffa aspects of Four Lions – but not necessarily the anarchic, Paddy Chayefskyian verve, insight and verbal wit of the film’s satire. Having made a film on this subject matter myself, I can tell you that Morris has accomplished no small feat in bringing out the sheer lunacy of the terrorist worldview – while keeping the tone light, and respecting the earthy humanity of the characters.

Check this clip out below for an example – it comes from one of my favorite scenes in the film, as rapper Hassan gets recruited by the completely insane Azzam al-Britanni while attending a ridiculous academic conference on jihad:

The inevitable question that films like Four Lions or The Infidel or Living with the Infidels or Kalifornistan always inspire is: is the film ‘humanizing’ terrorists? And the answer is, of course, yes … which is exactly what real-world terrorists, intoxicated with their self-image as divinely inspired warriors, never want.  As we know only too well at this point, real-world terrorists do not consider themselves mere human beings … but jihadis, divinely inspired by Allah. REMINDER: Kalifornistan Opens Free Thinking Film Festival on November 12th

I wanted to remind our Libertas readers in the Northeast today that Kalifornistan, a film starring LFM Co-Editor Govindini Murty, and which I wrote and directed, will be opening the Free Thinking Film Festival in Ottawa, Canada this coming Friday, November 12th. We’re very excited about this, among other reasons because the Free Thinking Film Festival is the only festival taking place anywhere this year that will be devoted to promoting principles of freedom as expressed through the cinema.

The Free Thinking Film Festival is designed by its founder Fred Litwin to celebrate “limited government, free market economics, and the dignity of the individual.” We’re very honored that Kalifornistan was chosen to open the festival for its Opening Night Gala, an event which will also serve as a fundraiser for the Military Family Resource Centre – which helps military families in Canada. Tickets for this event are available here.

The Complete Metropolis Screens on TCM, Nov. 7th

There is some great news today, which is that Turner Classic Movies will be showing the newly restored, ‘complete’ version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis on the evening of Sunday, November 7th – along with a documentary associated with the restoration process. The Infidel Screens in Los Angeles Tonight/Oct. 20th

We wanted our Los Angeles readers to know that there is a screening of the extraordinary new Omid Djalili comedy The Infidel here in LA tonight at 7pm, at the Harmony Gold Theater (where we used to do some of our Liberty Film Festival screenings), and both Omid Djalili and Richard Schiff will be there for a Q&A session after the film.

If you haven’t had the chance to see this film yet, you really should. [It’s available for purchase in our LFM Store as a DVD or download, by the way.] It’s completely hilarious, and deals in a warm-hearted way with a lot of taboo subjects that most American filmmakers currently seem too timid to cover.

Taiwan Film Days in San Francisco: Monga

By Joe Bendel. Forces from the Mainland have their eyes on Formosa territory. It is a familiar story, but in this case it is the Chinese syndicate looking to dislodge the traditional Taiwanese neighborhood triads in Doze Niu’s Monga, which opens the San Francisco Film Society’s Taiwan Film Days this Friday at the Viz Theater.

In the 1980’s, nearly every densely packed block of Taipei’s Monga neighborhood has its own triad, like the Temple Front Gang. It is here that the fatherless Chou Yi-Mong finds a sense of belonging. Recruited after standing up to a pack of bullying classmates, Chou (a.k.a. Mosquito) makes fast friends with Boss Geta’s son Dragon Lee and his three running mates. The fab five fight like unit, though they know the rules of the streets dictate they might eventually find themselves rivals. Frankly, Mosquito often does not understand why they are brawling, but the friendship is real. It is even realer than real for Monk, who is devoted to Dragon in quite a suggestive way.

Of course, the nature of their camaraderie is such that betrayal is inevitable, especially with the Mainlanders looking to move in. Indeed, the young gang princes find themselves caught up in a power struggle between those who want to maintain local control of organized crime, like Boss Geta, and those who want to cut a deal with the Northern triads, most notably including Grey Wolf, mysterious old flame of Mosquito’s mother.

Though Monga was selected by Taiwan as its official foreign language Oscar candidate, it is a highly commercial film (in a good way). Energetically mixing teenaged coming of age angst with gritty street level gangster power games, it pretty much has all the elements. There is even young love, street smart as it may be, when Mosquito falls for Ning, a beautiful young prostitute often demeaned for her nearly invisible birthmark.

Monga features a number of young Taiwanese television and pop-stars who likely brought a built-in fan base to the film in the ROC. However, they are well suited to their roles, particularly Ethan Ruan as the intense Monk. Mark Chao also seems to appropriately grow into the role of Mosquito, while the haunting Chia-yen Ko projects a fragile vulnerability as Ning. Yet, the silver coiffed Niu might even upstage his young cast, appearing as the intriguing Grey Wolf.

With generous helpings of Big Brawl style street fighting and unapologetically tear-jerking romance, Monga has something for a wide array of Asian cinema devotees. Thoroughly entertaining, it deserves a productive life on the festival circuit and even a shot at specialty distribution. It should be a crowd pleasing opener for SFFS’s Taiwan Film Days when it screens at the Viz Cinema next Friday (10/22).

Anti-Islamic Terror Documentary Killing in the Name Up for Oscar Consideration

By Jason Apuzzo. The Wrap is reporting today that the anti-Islamic terror documentary Killing in the Name has been shortlisted for Academy Awards consideration. I’ve embedded the trailer for the film above – take a look.

Here below is how the film is described on its Facebook page:

“Four years ago, Ashraf Al-Khaled and his bride were celebrating what was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, when an Al-Qaeda suicide bomber walked into their wedding and blew himself up, killing both of their fathers in front of their eyes. The couple lost 27 members of their family that day.

“It’s a sad fact that stories like Ashraf’s pepper the news almost daily. In the last 5 years, over 88,000 people have been killed or injured in terrorist attacks worldwide. The majority, like Ashraf, were Muslims.

“How can someone be so robbed of their humanity that they happily commit mass murder and suicide? It’s one of the fundamental human questions of our era, one that has haunted Ashraf since his wedding day, and what is now driving him to rise from horrific tragedy to take an unprecedented step – breaking the silence in the Muslim community on this taboo subject by speaking out against terrorism.
